We have added a new member to our family! We adopted a wonderful golden retriever last weekend from a family who could no longer afford to take care of him properly and give him appropriate attention. We have been wanting a dog for awhile, but it was a tough spot to fill.
As I scanned the rescue websites, I looked high and low for the perfect fit - not too hyper, good with small children, will tolerate our two indoor rabbits (looked for a dog that was okay w/ cats as an indicator), large (Mark is partial to yellow labs), house trained, does not jump up and does not destroy things (basically we were NOT looking for a puppy).
We had mentioned to several people that we were looking and my sister said she knew someone trying to find a new home for their dog. Max seemed to fit the bill. He had been around kids and even though he was currently outside, he was an indoor dog at one point. For a golden retriever he is rather large - 85 pounds - and around 5 years old.
But what about the rabbits? The family also has cats, so we figured we would take a chance on Max and give him a test run. He did wonderfully!!! He does not bother the rabbits at all, but we still don't completely trust him alone with them, so we crate him at night (which he took to right away).
Sarah LOVES him! She giggles when she watches him walk around the house in circles and when he tries to lick her face. =) Since he had been outside, Mark took him to the groomers to get cleaned up. Unfortunately, they cut off all his pretty golden-red wavy fur!!!! Poor thing. Now he looks like a gold lab.
